About Acton CDP, California
Acton CDP, California is a census-designated place in Los Angeles County, California, with a population of 7,596 as of the 2010 census. It is located in the Antelope Valley, approximately 35 miles (56 km) northeast of downtown Los Angeles and 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Palmdale. It is bordered by Agua Dulce to the west and Vincent to the east.
The area was originally inhabited by the Shoshonean Native American people. In 1834, it was part of Rancho El Chorro Spanish land grant. By 1840, a number of settlers had arrived and established ranches. On September 26, 1870, a post office was established for Acton.
Growth in the area was spurred by the opening of the Antelope Valley Line of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1876. Among early businesses was a general store opened in 1884 by John Lakes, which later became Acton Hardware Company.
In the 1980s, Acton became home to a growing number of artists and musicians drawn to its rural setting and small-town atmosphere. The Acton Folk Music Center was founded in 1986 and hosts regular concerts and workshops. The center’s founders were honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Folk Alliance International in 2006.
