About Trabuco Canyon CDP, California

Trabuco Canyon is a census-designated place (CDP) in the Santa Ana Mountains, in Orange County, California. The population was 3,343 at the 2010 census. The CDP includes the community of Trabuco Canyon.

The Trabuco Canyon area was originally inhabited by the Tongva people. The Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European to see the canyon, in 1542. The canyon was later named by the Spanish for the trabuco, a type of Native American sling used to hurl rocks and other projectiles.

In the late 19th century, Trabuco Canyon was a popular picnic spot for residents of nearby Santa Ana and Orange. A resort known as Robinson’s Trabuco Oaks House was built in 1884 and soon became a popular destination for weddings and other special occasions.

The resort was destroyed by a fire in 1916, but the popularity of the canyon as a recreation spot continued to grow. In the 1920s and 1930s, several cabins were built in the canyon, and a road was constructed to connect Trabuco Canyon with the city of Corona del Mar.

Today, Trabuco Canyon is home to several thousand residents and is a popular destination for hiking, camping, and mountain biking.
