Modoc County, California is a county located in the northeastern corner of the state. The county seat is Alturas. Modoc County is home to the Modoc National Forest and the Lava Beds National Monument. The county has a population of around 9,000 people.
Modoc County was created in 1854 and was originally part of Siskiyou County. The county was named after the Modoc Native American tribe that lived in the area. The county was created during a time when there was a great deal of conflict between the Native Americans and settlers in the region.
The Modoc War was fought in the county in 1872-73. This was a conflict between the U.S. Army and a group of Modoc Indians led by Captain Jack. The war ended with the capture of Captain Jack and his followers.
Today, Modoc County is a quiet place with a lot of natural beauty. It is a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
