Philo is a census-designated place (CDP) in the San Francisco Bay Area of California. It is located in Sonoma County, north of Santa Rosa and south of Bodega Bay. The population was 1,063 at the 2010 census.

The town is named after Philo T. Farnsworth, an American inventor and television pioneer. Farnsworth developed and demonstrated the first working all-electronic television system in 1927. He also made major contributions to the development of radar and nuclear magnetic resonance.

The Philo post office opened in 1876, closed in 1877, and re-opened in 1881. The community was originally called “Farnsworth” after its founder, but was renamed “Philo” in honor of Farnsworth’s middle name when the post office reopened.
