About Calaveras County, California

Calaveras County is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills of central California. The county seat is San Andreas and the largest city is Angels Camp. The county was created in 1854 from parts of Tuolumne County and named for the Spanish word for skulls, which were found in great abundance during the early days of the California Gold Rush.

Today, Calaveras County is home to a population of over 45,000 people. The county is known for its agriculture, forestry, and tourism industries. Calaveras County is home to a number of state and national parks, including Calaveras Big Trees State Park and the Moaning Caverns.
