Oakland is a city in the U.S. state of California, located on the eastern side of the San Francisco Bay. As of the 2010 census, Oakland had a population of 390,724, making it the 8th-largest city in California and the 27th-largest city in the country. It is the county seat of Alameda County. Oakland is a part of the San Francisco–Oakland–Hayward metropolitan area, which is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in California with a population of over 4 million people.

Oakland’s territory covers what was once a mosaic of coastal terrace prairie, oak woodland, and north coastal scrub. Its land served as a hunting ground for several Native American tribes before it was explored by Spanish settlers in the late 18th century. During the Rancho and Mission periods, Oakland was primarily inhabited by Ohlone Native Americans and served as a waypoint for American explorers travelling to the region. The city began to rapidly grow after the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869 and was incorporated in 1872.

Oakland has a Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa), featuring cool, wet winters and dry summers. Its average January temperatures are a maximum of 57.5 °F (14.2 °C) and a minimum of 41.4 °F (5.2 °C). Its average July temperatures are a maximum of 73.7 °F (23.2 °C) and a minimum of 58.8 °F (14.9 °C). Oakland experiences an average of 23 days with high temperatures of 90°F (32°C) or higher and 64 days with lows of 32°F (0°C) or lower per year. On average, there are 14 nights annually where the temperature drops below freezing and 2 days where it reaches or exceeds 100°F (38°C).

Precipitation in Oakland is moderate year-round, averaging about 21 inches (530 mm) annually, but has a tendency to be higher in the winter months and lower in the summer months. The wettest months are from December to February; however, even during these months precipitation is usually less than 5 inches (130 mm). Snowfall is rare in Oakland, but light accumulations occur about once every few years.

The 2010 United States Census reported that Oakland had a population of 390,724. The racial makeup of Oakland was 163,066 (41.6%) White, 127,579 (32.6%) African American, 8,374 (2.1%) Native American, 13,958 (3.6%) Asian (1.3% Chinese, 0.8% Vietnamese, 0.6% Filipino, 0.4% Cambodian, 0.3% Laotian, 0.2% Indian, 0.2% Japanese, 0.1% Koreans), 3,458 (0.9%) Pacific Islander (0.5% Samoan, 0.1% Tongan), 119,744 (30.7%) from other races , and 22,961 (5.9%) from two or more races . Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 53,196 persons (13.6%).
