About El Granada CDP, California
El Granada CDP, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 4,584 at the 2010 census.
The CDP is located on the San Francisco Peninsula, about 30 miles (48 km) south of San Francisco. It is named for the Spanish word for pomegranate (granada), which was formerly abundant in the area.
The first European settlement in the area was a rancho established in 1835 by Mexican settlers. In 1856, the land was sold to Americans, who established a lumber mill. The town began to grow in the late 19th century, and a post office opened in 1896.
Today, El Granada is a bedroom community for Silicon Valley workers. Many residents commute to San Francisco or Palo Alto for work. The town is also home to several tech companies, including Google and Facebook.
