Hoopa is an unincorporated community located on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation. The reservation is home to the Hoopa Valley Tribe, a federally recognized tribe of Hupa, Yurok, and Karuk people.
The name “Hoopa” is derived from the Hupa word meaning “digging stick”, which refers to the traditional tool used for digging roots and gathering other plants.
The community of Hoopa is located in the heart of the redwood tree range along the Trinity River. It is approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of Willow Creek and 30 miles (48 km) north of Arcata.
