Kern County, California is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 839,631, making it the ninth-most populous county in California. Kern County comprises the Bakersfield, CA Metropolitan statistical area.

The county is named after the Kern River, which was named for Edward Kern, cartographer for General John C. Fremont’s 1845 expedition into the area. The county was formed in 1866 from parts of Los Angeles and Tulare Counties. Its first county seat was Havilah, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The county seat was moved to Bakersfield in 1874.

Kern County is a land of contrasts. The east side of the county is covered in mountains and includes Sequoia National Park, home to the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States, Mount Whitney. The west side of Kern County is covered by the San Joaquin Valley, one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world.

The city of Bakersfield is the largest city and county seat of Kern County. The city is known for its country music scene and agriculture. Other notable cities in Kern County include Taft, Tehachapi, and Ridgecrest.
