About Butte Valley CDP, California

Butte Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Siskiyou County, California, United States. The population was 1,525 at the 2010 census, up from 1,126 at the 2000 census. It is located along Interstate 5 south of the city of Dunsmuir.

The community was originally established as a stagecoach stop called Summit Springs in 1852. It was later renamed Butte Valley after a nearby mountain. A post office opened in 1857, and the stagecoach stop became known as Summit Valley. In 1863, the town’s name was changed to Butteville, and it was finally shortened to Butte Valley in 1926.

Butte Valley is located in the northern part of the Sacramento Valley at an elevation of 3,700 feet (1,100 m). It is situated on a plateau above the valley floor, with Butte Creek draining the area to the north. I-5 passes through the CDP, leading north 20 miles (32 km) to Weed and south 83 miles (134 km) to Redding.
