About Susanville city, California

Susanville is a city in northeastern California, in the United States. It is the county seat of Lassen County. The population was 17,974 at the 2010 census, up from 13,541 at the 2000 census. Susanville is located on the Susan River in the southern part of the county, east of the Sierra Nevada. The city is intersected by State Route 36 and State Route 139.

The area around Susanville was first settled by Native Americans of the Maidu tribe. The town was originally called Rooptown, and was renamed Susanville in 1857 after a nearby stream named for Lady Susan Hamilton-Gordon, wife of Governor James Gordon of California. Susanville’s development was due largely to the construction of the Central Pacific Railroad through town in 1864 and later the establishment of a U.S. military post called Fort Point in 1866. The city grew rapidly due to logging and farming activity in the area, as well as gold and silver mining.

In recent years, Susanville has become a bedroom community for Reno, Nevada and Chico, California due to its relatively low cost of living and close proximity to these larger cities. The city has also seen an influx of retirees from other parts of the country looking for a quiet place to live.
