About Kernville CDP, California

Kernville is a census-designated place (CDP) in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,165 at the 2010 census. Kernville is located on the Kern River, 33 miles (53 km) upstream from its mouth on Lake Isabella. It is the site of the headquarters of the Sequoia National Forest and gateway to the Sequoia National Park.

The town of Isabella was founded in1866 as a mining camp. In 1867, the name was changed to Kernville in honor of Captain Lawrence Edward Kern, who established a fort nearby during the American Civil War. The town served as a supply center for miners working in the area. A post office was established in 1868.

In the early 20th century, Kernville was a popular resort town, with several hotels and a golf course. The construction of Isabella Dam in 1953 flooded much of the town and forced many residents to relocate. The dam also created Lake Isabella, a large reservoir that is popular for boating and fishing.

Today, Kernville is a quiet community with a population of about 1,000 people. It is a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, fishing, and rafting.
