Poway is a city located in San Diego County, California. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 47,811. The city is located 15 miles (24 km) northeast of downtown San Diego.

Poway’s rural roots gave rise to its slogan “The City in the Country.” The city has experienced a great amount of growth since the late 1990s. The area was originally inhabited by the Native American Kawaiisu tribe.

Poway is a predominately white-collar community, with over 76% of residents aged 25 or older having earned a four-year degree. The city is known for its affluence and high quality of life; it was ranked as the 18th safest city in America in 2014. Poway’s median household income is among the highest in San Diego County.

The city has several public and private schools, including two high schools: Poway High School and Rancho Bernardo High School. The city also has two middle schools: Mesa Verde Middle School and Twin Peaks Middle School.
