Caruthers CDP, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 8,384 at the 2010 census. Caruthers is located 6mi southeast of downtown Fresno, at an elevation of 304feet.
Caruthers was founded in 1891 by William Carey Caruthers, a successful lawyer and businessman from San Francisco. He purchased land in the area and built a large ranch house which he called “The Oaks”. The ranch eventually grew to encompass over 2,000 acres (8 km2) and included a dairy, race track, and golf course.
The community of Caruthers began to grow in the early 1900s as more people settled in the area. A post office was established in 1903 and the Caruthers Union School District was formed in 1909. The first high school in Caruthers opened in 1925.
In the 1950s and 1960s, many of the large farms in Caruthers were divided into smaller tracts and sold for housing development. This led to a increase in population and the construction of new homes and businesses.
Today, Caruthers is a thriving community with a strong sense of pride and tradition. It is home to many families who have lived here for generations as well as newcomers who are drawn to the area by its small-town charm. There are several small businesses located in Caruthers, including a grocery store, gas station, pharmacy, and hardware store. The community also has its own elementary school and middle school.
