Canyon Lake is a city in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 10,561 at the 2010 census. It is one of the five cities in the Southwestern region of the county, and one of the twelve cities in the county overall.

The city is located on Canyon Lake, a man-made reservoir created by damming the canyon-like Temescal Creek just upstream from its confluence with the Elsinore Trough. It is adjacent to and south of the much larger Lake Elsinore.

Canyon Lake began as a housing development for retired military personnel in 1955. The development was built around the newly created Canyon Lake, which served as a recreational amenity for the residents. The city was incorporated in 1990, and has since grown to include a sizable retirement community as well as a large number of families.

The city is governed by a council-manager form of government, and its day-to-day operations are overseen by a professional city manager. The city’s police and fire services are provided by contract with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and Cal Fire, respectively.

Canyon Lake is served by two public school districts: Lake Elsinore Unified School District and Murrieta Valley Unified School District. There are also several private schools in the city.

Canyon Lake has a semi-arid climate with warm summers and cool winters. Precipitation is low throughout the year, but is typically higher in the winter months.
