North San Juan is a census-designated place (CDP) in Nevada County, California, United States. The population was 1,023 at the 2010 census, up from 992 at the 2000 census.

The town is located along State Route 49, 3 miles (5 km) north of Colfax. North San Juan was established as a mining town in 1851 and was originally known as Poverty Hill. A post office opened in 1852, and the town’s name was changed to North San Juan in 1855.

Mining continued in North San Juan through the early 20th century, and the town remained an important stop on the stagecoach route between Auburn and Grass Valley. However, the mines began to play out by the 1920s, and North San Juan’s population declined.

Today, North San Juan is a small community with a few businesses and services. It is popular with tourists visiting the nearby Sierra Nevada foothills for its scenic beauty and its proximity to many outdoor recreational activities.
