About Crescent Mills CDP, California

Crescent Mills is a census-designated place in Plumas County, California. The population was 1,773 at the 2010 census. Crescent Mills is located on the Middle Fork of the Feather River, 6 miles (9.7 km) northeast of Portola.

The town began as a mining settlement in the 1850s and was originally known as Miner’s Delight. A post office opened in 1854 under the name of Crescent City. In 1855, the town was renamed Crescent Mills.

The town’s economy was historically based on logging and mining. The sawmill at Crescent Mills operated from 1858 until it was destroyed by fire in 1874. A new sawmill was built in 1875, which operated until 1942. Mining in the area continued into the early 20th century.

Today, Crescent Mills is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, including fishing, camping, and hiking.
