Salida CDP, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in Stanislaus County, California, United States. The population was 13,722 at the 2010 census. Salida is located 5.5 miles (8.9 km) southeast of Modesto, at an elevation of 118 feet (36 m). It is part of the Modesto Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The first post office opened in Salida in 1871. Salida was originally called “Murphys Station”, after a nearby ranch owned by William and Margaret Murphy. In 1874, the Central Pacific Railroad built a station near the Murphys ranch, and the name of the community was changed to “Salida” (Spanish for “exit”).
Salida incorporated as a city in 1946. However, it disincorporated in 1948 due to financial difficulties. It then became a CDP in 1950.
Salida is a bedroom community for Modesto and other nearby cities. The economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to numerous wineries and is a popular destination for wine tours.
