About Bostonia CDP, California
Bostonia is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California. The population was 10,513 at the 2010 census.
The area now known as Bostonia was originally part of the Rancho Valle de los Reyes Mexican land grant. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, the Battle of Valle de los Reyes was fought in the area. After the war, the rancho was divided into smaller parcels, and in 1868 one of these parcels was purchased by Dr. James Blackburn, who built a home there.
The community that grew up around Blackburn’s home became known as Bostonia, after his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts. In the early 20th century, Bostonia was a stop on the El Centro-to-Yuma stagecoach line.
In 1910, the Bostonia Bulletin was founded as the community’s first newspaper. The paper is still published today and is now known as The East County Californian.
