About Twain CDP, California
Twain CDP, California is a census-designated place located in Calaveras County. The population was 3,894 at the 2010 census. Twain CDP is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills, east of Angels Camp and west of Copperopolis. It is named for Mark Twain, who lived in the area during the 1860s.
The area around Twain CDP was originally inhabited by the Miwok people. Gold was discovered in the area in 1848, which led to a gold rush and an influx of settlers. Twain CDP was founded in 1859 as a mining camp. The town grew rapidly during the 1860s and 1870s, but then declined after the gold mines were exhausted.
Today, Twain CDP is a small community with a population of less than 4,000. The town has a historic downtown area with shops and restaurants. There are also several parks and recreation areas nearby.
