About Jamul CDP, California

Jamul is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 6,163 at the 2010 census.

Jamul is located in the foothills of the rugged and rural eastern county, east of the city of El Cajon and south of Alpine. It is approximately 18 miles (29 km) east of downtown San Diego.

The area now known as Jamul was first inhabited by the Kumeyaay people. The name “Jamul” comes from the Kumeyaay word for “potato”, which was abundant in the area.

In 1867, the U.S. government established a military post called Camp Halleck in Jamul. The camp was used to help control the local Kumeyaay population. It was abandoned in 1877.

In 1908, Jamul’s first school was built. The community continued to grow slowly over the next few decades.

Today, Jamul is a rural community with a population of just over 6,000 people. Agriculture is still a significant part of the local economy, but many residents commute to jobs in San Diego and other nearby communities.
