Calipatria is a city in Imperial County, California. The population was 7,710 at the 2010 census, up from 7,289 at the 2000 census. The city’s name is derived from the Latin word for “right hand,” calipe.
The city is located in the southeast corner of the county, with the Salton Sea to the south and east. It is the southernmost incorporated city in California and the westernmost incorporated city in Imperial County. Calipatria is served by State Route 86 and State Route 111, both of which are part of the National Highway System.
The economy of Calipatria is based on agriculture and tourism. The area around Calipatria is known for its date palm trees, and the city is home to the Calipatria Date Festival. The festival, which takes place in February, celebrates the city’s agricultural heritage. Other attractions in the area include the Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge and the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area.
