About Smith River Rancheria and Off-Reservation Trust Land, California
The Smith River Rancheria is a federally recognized tribe of the Tolowa people, located in Del Norte County, California. The rancheria includes the main reservation, which is approximately 1,400 acres, as well as off-reservation trust land totaling nearly 10,000 acres. The tribe has about 500 members and is governed by a democratically elected Tribal Council.
The Smith River Rancheria’s economic development efforts have focused on creating businesses that will provide employment for members of the tribe. The tribe owns and operates a number of businesses, including a gas station, a convenience store, a lumber mill, and a RV park. The tribe is also involved in forestry and ranching activities. In recent years, the tribe has been working to develop a wind farm on their trust land.
The Smith River Rancheria is committed to preserving their culture and traditions. The tribe offers a number of programs and services to members, including language classes, cultural arts programs, and youth mentorship programs. The tribe also hosts an annual powwow which is open to the public.
