About Trona CDP, California
Trona is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 5,972 at the 2010 census. It is situated between the cities of Ridgecrest and Red Mountain, in the Indian Wells Valley.
The economy of Trona is supported mainly by mining operations. There are three large open-pit mines in the area, which extract trona (a mineral used in the manufacture of soda ash) and other minerals. These mines are among the largest and deepest in the world.
The community was established in 1913, and takes its name from the trona deposits found nearby. Trona is a lonely place, with few amenities or services, and a very harsh climate. However, it is also a place of great natural beauty, with stunning views of the desert landscape.
