The area now known as Rancho Mirage was originally inhabited by the Cahuilla people. In 1696, the area was explored by Spanish priest Juan Crespi, who named it “Valley of the Little Hills.” In 1917–1918, during World War I, much of the area was used for military training grounds by U.S. troops preparing to fight in Europe.
