About Hornitos CDP, California

Hornitos is a small census-designated place located in Mariposa County, California. The population was just over 200 at the 2010 census. The town is located on Highway 49, north of Mariposa and south of Coulterville.

The area around Hornitos was first settled by miners during the California Gold Rush in the 1850s. The town was named for the nearby hornitos, or small hills, that were rich in gold. A post office was established in 1854 and the town grew slowly over the next few years.

During the Civil War, many of the town’s residents left to fight for the Confederacy. When they returned, they found that their properties had been confiscated by the Union Army. This caused many of them to leave again, and the town never really recovered.

Today, Hornitos is a quiet place with a few businesses and a lot of history. It’s a great place to visit if you’re interested in learning more about California’s gold mining past.
