About Lone Pine CDP, California

Lone Pine CDP is a census-designated place (CDP) in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 2,035 at the 2010 census, up from 1,655 at the 2000 census.

Lone Pine is located at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in the Owens Valley between the Inyo and White Mountains. The town is east of the Sierra Nevada crest and west of Owens Lake. It is south of Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States. It is also within view of three fourteeners: Mount Williamson, Mount Russell, and the north end of the Palisades.

Lone Pine has been a gateway to the Sierra Nevada for hikers, climbers and fishermen since the late 1800s. The John Muir Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail pass through the town. The Mt. Whitney Portal road leads from Lone Pine to the trailheads for Mt. Whitney and the Whitney Portal.

The first people to settle in Lone Pine were Native Americans who arrived about 10,000 years ago. The Paiute tribe inhabited the area when settlers arrived in the mid-19th century. These early settlers were mostly ranchers and miners attracted by the prospect of wealth in the Owens Valley.

Today, Lone Pine is a popular stop for tourists visiting the Sierra Nevada. The town has several hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops. The Alabama Hills, just west of town, are popular with filmmakers and photographers. The area is also popular with rock climbers and campers.
