Bystrom is a census-designated place (CDP) in Stanislaus County, California, United States. The population was 4,871 at the 2010 census, up from 4,298 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Modesto Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The Bystrom community was founded in the late 19th century as a stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad. The town’s name was derived from one of the railroad’s builders, Charles Bystrom. The Bystrom post office opened in 1882.
The community remained a small rural town until after World War II when it began to experience rapid growth due to the expansion of Modesto and the development of nearby trailer parks and residential subdivisions.
Today, Bystrom is a bedroom community for Modesto and other nearby cities. It is home to a number of schools, parks, and businesses.
