About Rowland Heights CDP, California
Rowland Heights is a census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 48,553 at the 2010 census.
Rowland Heights is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley. The CDP is bordered by Hacienda Heights to the north, La Puente to the west, and West Covina and Walnut to the south.
The area now known as Rowland Heights was originally home to Native Americans of the Tongva tribe. The area was later settled by Spanish and Mexican ranchers. In the 1860s, William Workman, a wealthy rancher from La Puente, purchased a large portion of what is now Rowland Heights. He built a ranch house, which still stands today.
Rowland Heights was originally part of Rancho La Puente, which was divided into several smaller ranchos in the late 19th century. In 1906, Walter P. Rowland and John A. Rowe, two businessmen from Los Angeles, purchased 1,200 acres (490 ha) of land in the area and established the Rowland Land Company. They developed the land for farming and ranching.
In the 1920s, the Pacific Electric Railway created a commuter rail service that ran through Rowland Heights. This made it possible for people to live in the suburbs and commute to work in Los Angeles.
The community continued to grow in the 1930s and 1940s as more families moved to Rowland Heights. In 1944, the first elementary school was built in the community.
Today, Rowland Heights is a diverse community with a population of over 48,000 people. The community is home to several schools and parks, as well as businesses and restaurants.
