About Fort Bidwell Reservation and Off-Reservation Trust Land, California
The Fort Bidwell Reservation and Off-Reservation Trust Land is located in Modoc County, California. The reservation was established in 1864 and covers an area of 1,200 acres. There are approximately 200 members of the Modoc Tribe who live on the reservation. The tribe also owns trust land off the reservation, which covers an additional 2,300 acres.
The Modoc Tribe has a long history of living in the area now known as California. The tribe originally lived in what is now Oregon, but were forced to move to the Klamath Reservation in Northern California in 1864. The Modoc Tribe was one of the first tribes to sign a treaty with the United States government. The treaty was signed in 1864 and gave the tribe the right to live on the Klamath Reservation.
The Modoc Tribe was forced to move again in 1872, when the Klamath Reservation was divided into two parts. The northern part of the reservation became the Modoc National Forest, and the southern part became the Lava Beds National Monument.
