About Campo CDP, California

Campo is a census-designated place (CDP) in the southeastern corner of San Diego County, California. The population was 2,784 at the 2010 census. Campo is named for the grassy plains that surround the community.

The area around Campo was first settled by the Kumeyaay people. In 1769, the Spanish established a mission in the area, which led to a small settlement known as El Campo de San Ysidro. This settlement eventually grew into the town of San Ysidro.

In 1848, after the Mexican-American War, the area became part of the United States. A stagecoach line was established through the area, and a post office was opened in 1852. The town of Campo was officially founded in 1879.

Today, Campo is a rural community with a population of less than 3,000. The main industries are agriculture and tourism. The area is popular with outdoor enthusiasts, as it offers hiking, camping, and fishing opportunities.
