El Cerrito is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 23,171 at the 2010 census. El Cerrito was founded by Spanish colonists in 1797 and was originally named Rancho San Pablo de Portola. The city’s name refers to the small hill or knoll that overlooks the city.
The city is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay and is bordered by Albany and Richmond to the north, San Pablo to the east, and Kensington and Berkeley to the south. El Cerrito is home to a number of parks and open space reserves, including the Hillside Natural Area, Wildcat Canyon Regional Park, and Point Pinole Regional Shoreline. The city is also home to a number of businesses, including some who are involved in the food industry.
El Cerrito has a Mediterranean climate and is generally mild throughout the year. The average high temperature in July is typically in the low 80s, while the average low temperature in January is in the mid-40s. The city experiences an average of about 21 inches of rain per year.
