East Los Angeles is a census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 126,496 at the 2010 census, up from 111,349 at the 2000 census. East Los Angeles is the least ethnically diverse suburb in the Greater Los Angeles area.
Hispanic or Latino of any race comprise 86.3% of East Los Angeles residents. Non-Hispanic Whites are 8.8% of the population. African Americans are 1.5%. Asians are 1.4%. Native Americans are 0.7%. Pacific Islanders are 0.06%. Other races are 2.1%.
There is a high concentration of gang activity and related violence in East Los Angeles. In addition to being the site of much recent gang activity, it has been the historic center of Hispanic street gangs in Los Angeles dating back to the 1940s.
