About Caribou CDP, California
Caribou CDP, California is a census-designated place in Shasta County, California. It is located along Interstate 5, north of Redding. As of the 2010 census, the population was 1,645.
The community was originally developed as a rest stop for travelers on the old Redding to Oregon Highway. The first post office opened in 1953. The name “Caribou” comes from a nearby creek which was named by early settlers for the many caribou (or reindeer) that once inhabited the area.
Today, Caribou CDP is a small community with a few businesses and services. There is a gas station, convenience store, and restaurant. The community is also home to a number of RV parks and campgrounds.
