About Westmont CDP, California
Westmont is a census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 20,170 at the 2010 census, up from 20,037 at the 2000 census. It is mostly residential with a commercial corridor along Vermont Avenue.
The area now known as Westmont was originally part of the Rancho San Pedro Spanish land grant. In 1887, Westmont was founded by John Peck and George Walker on 320 acres (130 ha) of land west of Montebello. It became a farming community producing grapes, walnuts, and beans. In 1907, the first school was built. The Union Pacific Railroad connected Westmont to Los Angeles in 1923.
Westmont began to grow rapidly after World War II as veterans returned and settled in the area. The population reached 30,000 by 1965. By 1980, it had reached its current population of over 20,000.
Westmont is located at 33°55′25″N 118°4′39″W (33.923602, -118.077501). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2), all of it land.
Westmont is bordered by South Gate to the north, Bell to the west, Huntington Park to the southwest, Walnut Park to the south, and City Terrace to the east.
