Vandenberg AFB CDP, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in Santa Barbara County, California, United States. The population was 3,066 at the 2010 census, up from 2,648 at the 2000 census. It is adjacent to the unincorporated community of Vandenberg Village and the city of Lompoc.

Vandenberg AFB is the only Department of Defense space launch facility on the West Coast of the United States. It is located about 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Santa Barbara and 150 miles (240 km) northwest of Los Angeles.

The base has a long history dating back to the early days of rocketry. It was established in 1941 as Camp Cooke, a training facility for Army Coast Artillery Corps troops. In 1957, it was renamed Vandenberg Air Force Base in honor of former Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg.

The base has been home to many important military space programs over the years, including the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles and spy satellites. More recently, it has been used for launching civilian satellites and for launching NASA space probes bound for Mars and other destinations in the solar system.

Vandenberg AFB is an important part of the California economy and plays a vital role in the state’s aerospace industry.
