King City is a city located in Monterey County, California. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 12,874. King City is a member of the Salinas Valley, a large agricultural region in California. The city is located along Highway 101, and is a stop on the Amtrak Coast Starlight train route.
King City was founded in 1912 by railroad magnate William Randolph Hearst. The city was named after Hearst’s newspaper, the New York Evening Journal. The city grew rapidly during the early 20th century, and became a major center for agriculture in the Salinas Valley. Today, King City remains an important agricultural center, and is home to several large companies, including Dole Food Company and Driscoll Strawberry Associates.
