Calpine is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census.

Calpine is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is situated on Highway 99, approximately halfway between Sacramento and Modesto.

The area around Calpine was first inhabited by the Miwok Native Americans. The first European settlers arrived in the early 1850s, and the town was founded in 1852.

Calpine has a history of mining and agriculture. Gold was mined in the area during the 1850s, and farming has been an important part of the local economy since the early days of settlement.

Today, Calpine is a bedroom community for the nearby cities of Stockton and Tracy. Many residents commute to these cities for work or shopping. There are also a number of businesses and services located in Calpine, including several restaurants, gas stations, and a grocery store.
