About Ben Lomond CDP, California

Ben Lomond is a census-designated place (CDP) in Santa Cruz County, California, United States. The population was 4,087 at the 2010 census. Ben Lomond is an unincorporated community in the San Lorenzo Valley of the Santa Cruz Mountains above Scotts Valley and Los Gatos. A popular local landmark is the Ben Lomond Quarry.

The San Lorenzo Valley was originally settled by Ohlone Native Americans. In 1867, a sawmill was built in the area, and the community that grew up around it became known as “Slabtown.” In 1874, the name was changed to “Ben Lomond” after a nearby mountain in Scotland.

The San Lorenzo Valley was a logging community for many years, but starting in the 1960s, it began to attract artists and hippies. The Quarry Arts Center was founded in 1974, and today there are several working artists studios and galleries in Ben Lomond. The community is also home to several organic farms and a weekly farmers market.
