About Butte Creek Canyon CDP, California
Butte Creek Canyon is a census-designated place (CDP) in Butte County, California, United States. The population was 1,433 at the 2010 census, up from 1,208 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chico Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The Butte Creek Canyon CDP includes the communities of Centerville, Cohasset, and Forest Ranch. Centerville is located at the junction of Centerville Road and Highway 32. Cohasset is located on Highway 32, 5 miles (8 km) east of Centerville. Forest Ranch is located on Highway 32, 10 miles (16 km) east of Cohasset.
Butte Creek Canyon was originally populated by the Maidu Indians. In 1849, the first settlers arrived in the canyon, and by 1851 there were about 50 families living there. The first post office in the canyon was established in 1854.
The Butte Creek Canyon area was hard hit by the Camp Fire in 2018. Many of the homes in the CDP were destroyed by the fire, and the population has decreased significantly since then.
