Lake City is a census-designated place (CDP) in Shasta County, California, United States. The population was 1,299 at the 2010 census, up from 1,025 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Shasta County.

Lake City was founded in 1852 as the county seat of Shasta County. The town was named after nearby Lake Shasta. The first courthouse was built in 1854. In 1855, the town was destroyed by a fire and rebuilt. The second courthouse was completed in 1856.

In 1857, Lake City was platted and a post office established. The town grew rapidly during the 1860s and 1870s due to the nearby mining boomtowns of Redding and Weaverville. By 1880, Lake City had a population of over 1,000.

The town declined in the early 20th century as the mining boom ended and the population began to migrate to larger cities. By 1950, the population had declined to just over 500. In recent years, however, Lake City has begun to rebound as a bedroom community for the cities of Redding and Weaverville.
