About Castella CDP, California

Castella is a small unincorporated community in Shasta County, California, United States. It is located on the Sacramento River, 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Redding, at an elevation of 1,900 feet (580 m).

The town began as a construction camp for the Central Pacific Railroad in 1868. The Castella post office opened in 1870. The community was named for Rafael Castro, who built a toll road through the area in 1849.

In 1873, the railroad completed a tunnel through nearby Dunsmuir, making Castella redundant as a rail stop. However, the town remained an important rest stop for stagecoaches traveling between Oregon and California.

Today, Castella is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, with fishing, camping, and hiking opportunities in the nearby Trinity Alps.
