West Athens is a census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 8,729 at the 2010 census, up from 8,098 at the 2000 census. It is an unincorporated area largely surrounded by the city of Inglewood.
West Athens was developed on land that was part of Rancho La Ballona, a Spanish land grant given in 1839 to Ygnacio and Augustin Machado. The land eventually became part of the first Rancho La Ballona subdivision created in 1887 by George Peck. In 1906 West Athens was subdivided and Peck’s daughter Florence Peck Amsden created the West Athens Tract Association. The city of Inglewood annexed the tract in 1909.
The West Athens community is served by the Los Angeles Unified School District. It is within walking distance of multiple elementary schools, a middle school, and two high schools. There are also several private schools in the area.
West Athens is a diverse community with residents of all ages and backgrounds. It is a peaceful community with little crime and a strong sense of pride among its residents.
