Riverside was founded in the early 1870s and was originally known as the City of Riverside. The city was named for its location on the Santa Ana River. In 1883, the Southern Pacific Railroad arrived in Riverside, and the city began to grow rapidly. In the early 20th century, Riverside was a popular tourist destination, due to its mild climate and scenic location.

Today, Riverside is a thriving city with a diverse economy. The city is home to several major universities, including the University of California, Riverside and California State University, Fullerton. Riverside is also a popular retirement destination due to its warm climate and low cost of living.
