About McKinleyville CDP, California

McKinleyville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Humboldt County, California, United States. McKinleyville is located 4.5 miles (7.2 km) north of Arcata, at an elevation of 141 feet (43 m). The population was 15,177 at the 2010 census, up from 13,599 at the 2000 census. McKinleyville is a community which was developed beginning in the late 1950s on land owned by the Arcata & Mad River Railroad Company and the Pacific Lumber Company. It was named after President William McKinley.

The first post office opened in 1957. McKinleyville is served by U.S. Highway 101 and State Route 36. McKinleyville has a commercial airport, theArcata-Eureka Airport, which serves the greater Humboldt County area.

The primary industries in McKinleyville are tourism and timber. The town is home to the Headwaters Forest Reserve, which includes 6,000 acres (24 km2) of old-growth forest. The reserve is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and is open to the public for hiking and other activities.
