Mokelumne Hill is a census-designated place (CDP) in Calaveras County, California, United States. The population was 1,153 at the 2010 census, up from 1,045 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greater Sacramento metropolitan area.
Mokelumne Hill was founded in 1848 by Theodore Hinkle and a group of prospectors during the California Gold Rush. The town was originally known as Hinkletown, but was later renamed after the Mokelumne River. The town became an important stopover for miners and stagecoaches travelling between Sacramento and the Mother Lode.
Today, Mokelumne Hill is a popular tourist destination for its history and small-town charm. The town is home to several historic buildings, including the Hotel Leger, which was built in 1852 and is one of the oldest hotels in California.
