Glen Ellen is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sonoma Valley, Sonoma County, California, USA. The population was 1,793 at the 2010 census. Glen Ellen is the location of Jack London State Historic Park, the Sonoma Mission Inn, and a former home of author and conservationist John Muir.
Glen Ellen is situated along Arnold Drive in eastern Sonoma Valley. It lies on the north side of Sonoma Creek at an elevation of 502 feet (153 m). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.8 square miles (12 km2), all of it land.
Glen Ellen has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate that is characterized by cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The nearest National Weather Service reporting station is at Napa Airport, about 15 miles (24 km) to the northeast. Average January temperatures range from 39 °F (4 °C) to 54 °F (12 °C). Average July temperatures range from 58 °F (14 °C) to 79 °F (26 °C). There are an average of 21 days annually with highs of 90 °F (32 °C) or higher and an average of 3.5 days with lows of 32 °F (0 °C) or lower.
The record high temperature was 115 °F (46 °C), on July 20, 1925. The record low temperature was 17 °F (−8 °C), on December 22, 1990. Average annual precipitation is 39.5 inches (1,001 mm), with measurable precipitation falling on an average of 71 days each year. The wettest “rain year” was from July 1974 to June 1975 with 67.40 inches (1,714 mm) and the driest from July 1976 to June 1977 with 13.00 inches (330 mm). The most rainfall in one month occurred in February 1998 with 16.47 inches (418 mm). The most rainfall in 24 hours was 5.53 inches (140 mm), on December 23, 1955.”
