About Camanche Village CDP, California

The Camanche Village CDP is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Calaveras County, California. The village is situated on the north bank of the Mokelumne River, east of the city of Angels Camp. The population of Camanche Village was 1,831 at the 2010 census.

The village was founded in 1848 by James W. Marshall, who discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma. The camp became known as Marshall’s Creek after Marshall, and later as Camanche, after the nearby Native American village of the same name.
