The area was first settled by the Cabot family in the early 1900s. In 1911, daughter Lillian Cabot started a school for local children which eventually became the Cabot School District. In 1961, the district was consolidated into one school: Cabot School.
The area around Thermal was originally agricultural, with crops such as cotton, alfalfa, and date palms being grown. In the 1950s and 1960s, however, the area began to be developed for tourism, with golf courses and resorts being built. This trend has continued into the present day, with Thermal now being home to several hotels and golf courses.
