About Lake San Marcos CDP, California
Lake San Marcos is a census-designated place (CDP) in the North County region of San Diego County, California. The population was 10,626 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by the city of San Marcos to the east and north, and by the unincorporated community of Rancho Santa Fe to the south and west.
The Lake San Marcos area was originally inhabited by the Luiseño people. In 1823, the Mexican government granted Rancho San Marcos to Joaquin Carrillo. In 1841, William Heath Davis bought Rancho San Marcos, and it remained in his family until 1946.
The lake was created in 1923 when Edwin A. Menard built a dam on Cottonwood Creek. The lake and surrounding area were developed into a residential community in the 1950s.
Lake San Marcos is home to several species of fish, including largemouth bass, catfish, and bluegill. The lake is stocked with fish on a regular basis. Fishing is allowed from dawn to dusk.
There are several parks and recreation areas around Lake San Marcos, including Lake Park, Discovery Park, and Mulberry Park. The Lake San Marcos Community Center offers a variety of classes and programs for all ages.
